A glass flask of volume 400 cm3 is just filled with mercury at 0 degree C. How to find out how muchmercury overflows when the temperature of the systemis raised to 80°c. The coefficient of cubical expansion of glass is1.2 x 10-5 °C-1 and that of mercury is 1.8 x 10-5°C-1

Answer:

0.192cm^3

Real volume expansion of liquid = volume expansion of vessel+ apparent expansion of liquid

Apparent expansion of liquid is the amount of liquid or mercury which overflows when the temperature of system is raised.

apparent coefficient cubical expansion of liquid = real coefficient cubical expansion of liquid -coefficient of cubical expansion of glass

app = (1.8 x 10^-5 - 1.2 x 10^-5)°C-1

       = 0.6 x10^-5°C-1

Apparent expansion of liquid = 400cm^3 x 0.6x10^-5°C-1 x (80-0)°c

                                                 =0.192 cm^3

As far as I guess.
