In "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty," by James Thurber, the title character has five fantasies in which he is transported out of his own dull life into a life that is more adventurous.

In the first fantasy, he is a military officer who manages to keep his crew confident even as he orders them to fly through a dangerous storm.

In the second, he is a doctor, about to perform an operation on a banker.

In the third, he is a witness in a courtroom who ends up with a beautiful girl falling for him.

In the fourth, he is once again a brave military officer, this time a bomber pilot about to go on a dangerous mission.

In his fifth and final fantasy, he bravely faces death in front of a firing squad.
