World leaders and diplomats presented the fight against global warming as a battle for humanity's survival during their opening speeches at the COP27 climate summit in Egypt on November 7, Reuters reported.

The head of the UN during his speech said that the lack of progress so far makes the world rush along the "highway to hell."

Sharp messages, echoed by African, European and Middle Eastern leaders, set a similar tone at the Sharm el-Sheikh conference.

“Humanity has a choice: cooperate or perish,” UN Secretary-General António Guterres told delegates, urging them to accelerate the shift away from fossil fuels and accelerate funding for poorer countries struggling with climate impacts that have already taken place.

Despite decades of climate negotiations, countries have failed to cut global greenhouse gas emissions, and their promises to do so in the future are not enough to keep the climate from warming to what scientists say will be catastrophic.

Conflict in Europe, deteriorating diplomatic relations between the world's biggest emitters, the US and China, runaway inflation and energy shortages threaten to further distract countries from the fight against climate change, threatening to derail the transition to clean energy, Guterres said.

“Greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise. Global temperatures continue to rise. And our planet is rapidly approaching a tipping point that will make climate chaos irreversible,” he said. “We are on the highway to climate hell with our foot on the accelerator.”

Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore, also speaking at the event, said that world leaders have trust issues when it comes to climate change and criticized developed nations' continued pursuit of gas resources in Africa, which he called "fossil fuel colonialism." ".

“We all have a trust problem: we talk and we start acting, but we don’t do enough,” Gore said.

French President Emmanuel Macron said that while the world is distracted by a string of global crises, it is important not to sacrifice national commitments to combat climate change.

“We will not sacrifice our climate commitments because of the Russian energy threat,” Macron said, “so all countries must continue to meet all of their commitments.”

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the conflict in Europe was a reason to accelerate efforts to move the world away from fossil fuels.

“Climate security goes hand in hand with energy security, the ugly conflict in Ukraine and rising energy prices around the world are no reason to delay climate change. This is the reason to act faster,” he said.
