Although at first antagonistic toward British rule and interference with Indian education, Raja Ram Mohan Roy came to see the benefit that India could gain from British education and from the good points of Christianity. As a result he invested in establishing a school that taught British-influence inspired subjects including mathematics, social science, sciences, and English.

While a devoted adherent to Hinduism, holding weekly meetings at his house where the Vedas was recited and hymns sung, he also support the opening of a Unitarian Church Mission to be established in Calcutta, India, now Kolkata, India. To this day, may people in Kolkata are educated at mission backed schools and education in India is almost universally given in English, certainly higher education and eduction in cities is given in English.
