In the short story, "The Monkey’s Paw," by W. W. Jacobs, Mr. White made his first wish for 200 pounds as a means of paying off the house. This wish was made essentially to prove that the monkey paw had now magical ability. Even though they were tempted to believe it, the White’s didn’t really believe that a monkey’s paw could grant wishes. This view point was changed when their son was killed and his employer brought a check for 200 pounds as a means of restitution. Even then, they were reluctant to believe the story.
