The neural or central canal (neurocoel) from the beginning of its development is laterally compressed by the thick lateral walls of the spinal cord derived from the original neural folds.

Function:-
  • Central canal is the cavity of the spinal cord.
  • The fourth ventricle is present between the brain stem and the cerebellum.
  • Volkmann's canal is present in the long bones.
  • Iter connects the 3rd and the 4th ventricle.
