What kind of solution is formed by mixing alum and water

Aluminium Sulphate

Addition of alkali to alum solution produces basic aluminium sulphate, which is used as a mordant. For mordanting 10 kg of cotton, 1 kg of alum and 0.5 kg of sodium hydroxide are dissolved in 200 l of water to give basic aluminium sulphate of required strength.
