BENGAL'S PARTITION - DEFINITION

Lord Curzon announced the division of province of Bengal on July 20, 1905. As per the scheme, 'Bengal' province included western districts of Bengal proper, Bihar and Odisha with Calcutta as its capital. Eastern Bengal and Assam province included eastern districts of Bengal proper and Assam with Dacca as its capital.

BRIEF DISCUSSION ABOUT ANTI-PARTITION MOVEMENT - DEFINITION

The Partition of Bengal led to a mighty upsurge which brought people and political leaders together. The Anti-Partition Movement was initiated on August 7, 1905. On that day, a massive demonstration against the partition was organised in Kolkata. From this meeting, the delegates dispersed to spread the movement to the rest of the province.

DESCRIBE THE REASONS BEHIND BENGAL'S PARTITION - SHORTCUT

The main motive behind the partition of Bengal, according to the British rulers, was the administrative necessity. It was intended to curb the influence of Bengal by placing Bengalis under two administrations and reducing them to a minority in Bengal itself. It was also meant to foster division on the basis of religion wherein East Bengal would comprise of Muslim majority and West Bengal would comprise of Hindu majority.

PEOPLE'S REACTION TOWARDS ANTI-PARTITION MOVEMENT - DEFINITION

The partition came into effect on October 16, 1905. The leaders of the protest movement declared it a day of national mourning throughout Bengal. It was observed as a day of fasting. There was hartal in Kolkata. People walked barefooted and bathed in the Ganga in the early morning hours.

EXPLAIN THE IMPACT OF ANTI-PARTITION MOVEMENT - SHORTCUT

The Anti-Prtition Movement accelerated the Nationalist Movement by spreading it among the general masses. The ideas of Swadeshi and Boycott took shape. The people lost faith in the justice and fair play of the British. The Anti-Partition agitation backfired the plans of Lord Curzon. It gave added strength to the national movement. It gave an opportunity to the Assertive Nationalists to lead the National Movement.

DISCUSS ABOUT THE SWADESHI AND BOYCOTT MOVEMENT - SHORTCUT

'Swadeshi' literally means 'of one's own country'. The Swadeshi movement aimed at the promotion of indigenous industries for strengthening the nation. Boycott movement meant 'abstaining from the purchase of British goods' which included the boycott of English cloth, salt, sugar, etc.

Swadeshi and Boycott Movements marked the beginning of a new era in India's freedom struggle. These movements brought into politics new classes of people without any distinction of caste and creed.
