In my opinion, DuBois had at least two purposes in discussing religion.

First, he realizes that churches are a major force in the black community.  He talks about how the leaders of the large churches are among the most powerful black people in the world.  Because of this, it is important for him to understand the nature of black religion.

Second, he believes that religion is responsible for, or at least reflects, a difference between northern and southern blacks.  This is the difference between aggressively demanding rights (North wants to) and more passively waiting for rights (the South wants to).
